Stephanie and Dale are the kind of couple every photographer loves to photograph: good looking, photogenic, and comfortable in front of the camera. A few weekends ago I loaded up the camera gear and the hubby and met these guys at the San Juan Capistrano Mission for a bit a shooting, and then headed to spot on Laguna Beach called The Thousand Steps for their engagement photos. Okay… I should have been concerned when I heard the name of this place, but nothing could have prepared my legs for the decent down to the beach. All of our legs were trembling by the time we reached the bottom! Enjoy a few pics from the day and I’ll be sharing their wedding later this year!

1. Without additional lighting
In this shot, I was shooting into the setting sun to add the beach scene to the surfboard look, but the back of the board and their faces were too shaded. I could have played around exposing them more, but would have lost the rich colors in the sky. Instead, I decided to whip out my trusty Pocketwizards. I use the TT1 and two TT5s, and I love this little combo. After walking down the “Thousand Steps’ at Laguna beach, the last thing I wanted to do was lug a ton of lighting equipment. The pocket wizards and two EX550IIs fit perfectly in my ShootSac, and because my Pocketwizards can high-speed flash sync all the way up to 1/8000th, I can shoot in bright daylight at any shutter speed I want. I had Cris hold a gold reflector to bounce some warm sunlight back on them, and moved the pocketwizards at a couple of different angles to get the shot I was going for. Looks a lot better, right?
